Preventing Fires, One Step at a Time

5 Simple Habits for Peace of Mind… Wall to Wall

Every fall, Fire Prevention Week reminds us that a safe home starts with small, simple habits. Taking care of your space gives you the freedom to breathe easy and fully enjoy your home.

1

Give your smoke alarms a voice

A simple beep can save a life. Test them every time the clocks change and replace the batteries as needed. If your alarm is over ten years old, don’t wait to replace it.

2

Keep a fire extinguisher handy—and know how to use it

A small device, easy to store in your kitchen or hallway, can make all the difference if a fire breaks out. Take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with its use.

3

Know your exits—and keep them clear

Take a few minutes to identify all exits near your apartment: staircases, fire doors, emergency exits. Make sure your patio door and windows remain unobstructed at all times, free of furniture or storage bins. In an evacuation, every path should be easy to access.

4

Be smart with electricity

Damaged cords or overloaded power strips can spark trouble. A quick check regularly can prevent serious accidents. Are you a tenant and notice a damaged outlet? Contact our residential maintenance team.

5

Stay attentive in the kitchen

Most home fires start on the stove. Never leave a pot unattended and keep handles turned inward. Make sure everything is turned off before leaving the kitchen.

These simple habits protect more than walls—they protect your memories, your comfort, and most importantly, the people you love.
